History

The Gaia Cable Car construction began in March 2009 and public operation started two years later, in April 2011.

The cable car has already become a tourist attraction and a sustainable means of transport, connecting Gaia riverside promenade to the upper deck of the Luís I bridge over river Douro close to the Jardim do Morro Metro station and the belvedere of Serra do Pilar convent church.

Safety

The cable car uses all available and latest technologies for maximum safety. The system’s main functions, such as speed regulation, opening and closing of grip and vehicle doors and wind behavior are permanently monitored by automatic electronic fail safe circuits.

Technical Description

Gaia Cable car is designed to give passengers a smooth and stress free ride in the highest safety. Motoric station is at Jardim do Morro upper station. Cais de Gaia is return station and also withholds hydraulic tensioning system.

When out of operation, the cabins are parked in both terminals.
